Aldous Huxley

Picture of Aldous Huxley

Aldous Huxley was born in Godalming in the UK in July 1894. He died in Los Angeles on November 22nd, 1963, the day John F Kennedy was assassinated. Aldous Huxley was born into a very famous family. His mother, Julia was the niece of Matthew Arnold. He was the grandson of Thomas Henry Huxley, the renowned zoologist. His brothers, Julian and Andrew, also became eminent biologists. Huxley taught at Eton for a year in order to acrue some money. One of his pupils was Eric Blair (George Orwell). Huxley wrote social satires for the most part, beginning with his first novel, Crome Yellow. He would write about high society as if they were charicatures, often making humorous observations at their expense. Brave New World was a different sort of novel. It was a break from his normal offerings. Here he went for the throat, instead of shimmying around the edges. Huxley was brilliant at both methods, this one was effective because it was different.
