Alfred Bester was born in New York City on December 18, 1913, and died in Doylestown, Pennsylvania on September 30, 1987. Alfred Bester is mostly known for his science fiction novel 'The Demolished Man'. This novel was good enough to win the Hugo Best Novel Winner 1953. He also has had several nominations for the the Hugo short story prize. Virtual Unrealities contains many examples of his prowess. Before embarking on science fiction writing Alfred Bester had written for many other genres. Amongst his work was as chief editor for the Hollywood Magazine, where he acquired the tricks of interviewing celebrities. He said that he would 'establish a bridge of common interest with the interviewee'. And he has also done this with his audience. It is what makes him so readable. He was not afraid to put himself down if he felt he did not measure up to his high expectations of himself. Speaking about one of his later efforts he said 'There is something vitally wrong about that book' There are very many authors who would envious of the ability of Bester to write badly and still come up with the goods.
