August Strindberg

Picture of August Strindberg

August Strindberg was born in Stockholm on January 22, 1849 and died in Stockholm on May 14, 1912. August Strindberg was a playwright, novelist, essayist, painter and many other manifestations. Strindberg created his own style which combined naturalism with psychology to bestow a strength of purpose to his characters. In Miss Julie his concentration was on the character of the people rather than the plot of the story. Strindberg had a loathing for authority after his play Master Olof was rejected by the Royal Theatre. This enforced his will to succeed by writing plays that were different to what had gone before and that were superior to what had gone before.

Book Review:

In these three plays Strindberg displays his mastery of observation and uses his descriptive abilities to get to the root of the characters. We feel we are there in the situation, and not only there, but are acutely aware of everything that is going on.
