Dick Francis was a horse jockey and subsequently a crime fiction author. Francis was born on October 31, 1920 in Lawrenny, Pembrokeshire, Wales and died on February 14, 2010 in Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands. His books were mainly focused on the horse racing scene. Francis had achieved success as a jump jockey, winning over 350 races. After his retirement Francis took up writing novels. These too, became fast successes. Francis wrote his autobiography, called The Sport of Queens and this was a bestseller. From there, Francis became the racing correspondent for the Sunday Express. With this exposure his novels were almost all bestsellers. Whip Hand is one of his bestsellers.
