Scott Raymond Adams was born in Windham, New York in June 1957. Young Scott Adams was an avid fan of Peanuts cartoons and subsequently Mad Magazine Adams failed to get into an arts school when he was eleven so he decided to study law instead of pursuing art as a career. He graduated in 1975 and went on to receive a Bachelors degree in economics from Hartwick College in 1979. Afterwards he filled positions as management trainee, computer programmer, budget analyst, commercial lender, product manager, and supervisor. None of these occupations satisfied him as much as his drawing. He would draw late into the night and his inspiration would be his colleagues and bosses, where he would get the material for his greatest character, Dilbert. He tried several avenues to sell his craft, but failed. His break came with United Media in 1989. Gradually his cartoons became more popular and he was able to stop employment and draw full time for a living. Dilbert started appearing in newspapers all over the place. There was even a TV series for a couple of years. Adams started to branch into some serious writing, with his cartoons playing a big part. Combining the humour of Dilbert with the hard subject of business he set about a new career. The Dilbert Principle has been his flagship in this area. And it has proven to be a very successful one.
