Brian Friel was born in Knockmoyle, Omagh, County Tyrone, Northern Ireland on January 9, 1929. He died on October 2, 2015 in Greencastle, County Donegal, Ireland. Friel was a dramatist and a short story writer. He has been compared with Samuel Becker, Harold Pinter, Arthur Miller and Tennessee Williams for the quality of his craft. Philadelphia Here I Come is set in the fictional town of Ballybeg, as a number of his other plays are set. In these plays Friel offers us the vantage point to see a town developing from a small rural setting to a modern developed small city.
