J P Donleavy was born in New York City on April 23, 1926 of Irish parents in Brooklyn, New York, United States. Donleavy served in the US Navy in World War 2. After the War , Donleavy moved to Ireland and took up studies in Trinity College, leaving before he completed his degree. The Ginger Man, Donleavy's first novel, became acclaimed and banned in Ireland by reason of obscenity. J P Donleavy died on September 11, 2017, in Mullingar, Ireland.
