J R R Tolkien was born on January 3rd, 1892 and died on September 2nd 1973. Tolkien worked for the Oxford English Dictionary, in the history and etymology section, doing precise work on words of Germanic origin. In 1920 he moved to the University of Leeds where he later became a professor. While at Leeds, he wrote a Middle English Vocabulary and collaborated with E V Gordon on Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. In 1925, Tolkien went back to Oxford to take up a fellowship.There, he wrote The Hobbit and The Fellowship of the Ring and The Two Towers. Tolkien was surprised when The Hobbit became successful.Written for his children some years earlier, somehow it was noticed by the publisher George Allen & Unwin. They requested a sequel and Tolkien started on The Lord of the Rings.
