John McGahern was born in County Leitrim, Ireland on November 12, 1934.He died in Dublin's Mater Private Hospital on March 30, 2006. McGahern started teaching at Scoil Eoin Baiste but was subsequently dismissed after his second novel The Dark was published. This was because of the pornographic nature of the book. This forced him to leave Ireland and like so many before him, work at various jobs in Britain. The Barracks is McGahern's first novel.
Book Review:Elizabeth Reagan is a fighter and her circumstances require her to be one. Her husband is locked in servitude to a demanding job, her children are not her own, and her will is elsewhere, so she faces a battle to hold on to her sanity in claustrophobic surroundings.

Book Review:While he disregards his girlfriend`s attention he fantasises an idyllic love in his pornographic writings. His tenderness is reserved for his aunt who is dying in hospital.
