Sir John Clifford Mortimer CBE, QC was a barrister, lawyer, author and screenwriter who receives a Knighthood in 1998 and the CBE award in 1986. John Mortimer's main work as a barrister was in the area of obscenity and he was involved in a number of high profile cases, such as the appeal against their conviction of the publishers of Hubert Selby, Jr.'s Last Exit to Brooklyn. Another trial Mortimer was involved in was Virgin Records and the Sex Pistols (Never Mind he Bollocks). Mortimer retired from the bar in 1984. John Mortimer introduced Horace Rumpole to us and his character has been exceptionally popular in books, plays and television.
