Patrick O'Brian was born on December 12, 1914, in Chalfont Saint Peter, United Kingdom, and died on January 2, 2000, in Trinity College, Dublin, Ireland. O'Brian, whose real name was Richard Patrick Russ, was an author of sea-faring novels and series, notably the Aubray Maturin series of novels. Master and Commander is the first book in that series.
