Alice Taylor worked as a telephonist in Killarney and Bandon. She moved to Innishannon where she ran a guesthouse.From there she ran a supermarket and a post office. It was the biggest selling book ever published in Ireland Quench the Lamp was also successful, as were other sequels, such as The Village, Country Days and The Night Before Christmas.
