Carol Shields was born on June 2, 1935 and died on May 16, 2003. Carol Shields won the Pulitzer Prize and the Governor General's Award in Canada for The Stone Diaries, published in 1993. It won the National Book Critics Circle Award and was nominated for the Booker Prize. Shields had been a prolific writer, publishing collections of short stories as well as novels before her big break into the International scene came about. Unless was nominated for the 2002 Giller Prize, 2002 Governor General's Award, the Booker Prize and the 2003 Orange Prize for Fiction. It won the Ethel Wilson Fiction Prize.
