Gerry Adams remains a controversial figure. He has been President of the Sinn Fein political party since 1983. In that time they have become the second largest party in Northern Ireland. Cooperation with the SDLP led to involvement in the Anglo Irish Agreement and a subsequent Peace Settlement. From 1983 to 1992 and from 1997 to 2011 he has been an abstenionist member of Parliament for West Belfast. He relinquished this role when he became a TD in the Dail in the Republic of Ireland.
