Isabel Allende was born in Peru but brought up in Chile. In 2004 Isabel Allende was inducted into the American Academy of Arts and Letters. And in 2010 she received Chile's National Literature Prize. While in Chile, Allende had a job translating romantic novels from English to Spanish. She lost this job because she used 'artistic freedom' to accentuate the heroines and gave them additional roles and accolades, extra to the original. The House of the Spirits is her most famous novel. City of the Beasts, a Young Adult book, has also enjoyed large sales.
