John Berendt was born in Syracuse, New York, United States on December 5, 1939. John Berendt is an author of non-fiction books and was a finalist in 1995 for the Pulitzer prize for general non fiction. Berendt was an associate editor for Esquire from 1961 until 1969. He was editor of New York magazine from 1977 until 1979. Afterwards he was a columnist for Esquire from 1982 until 1994. Then Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil was published and this was an overnight success.
