Lillian Smith was born on December 12, 1897 in Florida, USA, and died on September 28, 1966 in Atlanta, Georgia, USA. She is best known for her best-selling novel Strange Fruit. Lillian Smith was vociferous in her opposition to racial segregation and wasted no time in making this known. The title was chosen after a Billie Holiday song of the same name about lynching and racism of black men.
