Paul Auster was born on February 3 in Newark, New Jersey, USA in 1947. Paul Auster has put his mind to writing novels, essays and poems and has been a translator. He has even tried his hand at directing movies.(Smoke, Blue in the Face and Lulu on the Bridge). Auster moved to Weequahic with his mother and his sister after his parents divorced. Auster spent four years in France translating French literature. Auster's works are mainly concerned with the search for identity and personal meaning. This may come from his time in France where existentialism has its roots. Many of his books are about writers searching for clues as to the identity of criminals. The Book of Illusions looks into the life of a retired silent movie actor as he faces life without his wife and two sons, killed in a plane crash. The Brooklyn Follies is about a man who is at the end of his tether but finds comfort in rediscovered relationships.
