John Fowles was born in Leigh-on-Sea in Essex on March 31, 1926 and died on November 5, 2005. John Fowles published his first novel, The Collector, in 1963. The Collector is a psychological thriller which was innovative and impactful at the same time. It was such a success that it allowed Fowles to give up his teaching job and concentrate on writing. Further success with The Magus and The French Lieutenant's Woman cemented his reputation as one of the best writers in the English language.
