When Walter finds out he decides to exact an unusual punishment on her. She is made to accompany Walter to remote mainland China where an epidemic of Cholera is sweeping the land.

Book Review:While Somerset Maugham was a medical student he kept a journal of his thoughts and inspirations. This book is a record of those inspirations.
W Somerset Maugham was born on January 25th 1874, and died on December 16, 1965 in Nice, France. Maugham had been a successful writer of plays, with four of his plays appearing in the West End at the same time. He then turned to fiction of which The Painted Veil is one of his most notable.
