William Maxwell.(1908 - 2000) Maxwell was born in Lincoln, Illinois, United States. They Came Like Swallows is semi-autobiographical. Like Bunny, William took ill with the flu and survived, yet his mother died from flu due to the plague of 1918. William Maxwell was fiction editor for the New Yorker magazine from 1936 until 1975. He has worked with the likes of Vladimir Nabokov, John Updike, J D Salinger, and many more.
